Internet retailer Amazon is set to create up to 2,000 new jobs in the UK during the next two years.

The online shopping site, which specialises in selling books, e-books and DVDs, will be opening up three new distribution centres across the country to help with growing demand from customers.

The announcement came after the company opened a new centre in Hemel Hempstead last week, creating 600 jobs.

The 2,000 new jobs are likely to fill a variety of vacancies including computing, human resources and management positions. Amazon already has distribution centres at Doncaster, Peterborough, Rugeley, Dunfermline, Gourock and Swansea Bay although it’s not known where the new sites will be.

The new warehouses are set to be up and running by 2015 – as Amazon begin to ramp up their production of newer versions of the Kindle, in a bid to rival competitor Apple.

Two new Kindle Fire models have already been announced – HD versions available in 7inch and 8.9inch screen sizes. The 7inch model is set for a UK release next month but it’s not yet known when the bigger screen size will be available to consumers.

As well as creating permanent jobs, Amazon will also be creating up to 3,000 temporary positions in the build up to the Christmas period.
